How We Treat It
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
About Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the posterior tibial nerve is pinched in the tarsal tunnel causing numbness over the bottom of the foot, pain, or a burning or tingling sensation over the base of the foot and heel.
The tarsal tunnel is a space in your foot formed between bones and overlying fibrous tissue. Within the tarsal tunnel lies a nerve called the posterior tibial nerve.
Who Can Suffer From It?
Sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint the cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome, though fractures, bone spurs, swelling and foot deformities can lead to the condition.
The risk for tarsal tunnel syndrome is higher in sports that include jumping, such as basketball, or sports with quick direction change, such as soccer or tennis.
Treating Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Evaluation of gait is important for rehabilitation, understanding issues with abnormal gait pattern will enable an expert to identify and correct improper compensations after injury, such as the fitting of orthotics.
